Food, Sex & Language

Vegetable Love (1986)

Vegetable Love (1986)

These three topics have been at the center of my work for many years, and at the center of my life even longer. I have also come to realize that they are some of the few things common to all cultures, and indeed to the development of human culture. It is believed that language developed around the need for food sharing, and that the other factor that promoted language was the need to find a suitable mate. Given the ties among these three things, and the way that all of them center on my mouth, has provoked an outpouring of work that uses this triad repeatedly. I have used food as a metaphor for sex (Vegetable Love), and many works consider the language of desire (Love After Science, etc.). In the past few years, I find myself repeatedly writing about food, its preparation, its place in our lives, its erotics and poetics.
